Sommer responded instantly, jumping onto the gravel path ahead of the guards, who had to hustle to catch up. Soon the three mice had made it all the way to the edge of the Sunken Meadow, which was halfway to the palace. Sommer looked back as he ran, hoping Nesbit would show himself. But the line of tree trunks blocked the view of Long Meadow.
Nesbit knew that if he hesitated, he was a dead mouse. He clambered higher along the slippery bark, not looking down until he reached the top of the main trunk, where the tree split into two large boughs. Acker and Zimbel would be on him in no time.
Sommer and Nesbit stood under the trellis and waited. Together they peered down the dark pergola tunnel in anticipation of the arrival of the König’s army.
