Schönbrunn Palace
Vienna, Austria
Bernardo Bellotto 1759/60
Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna
The backdrop for The Kingdom of the Sun and Moon is Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. Although spotting a mouse in the palace today is unlikely, it has been said that there was a time when an elaborate kingdom of mice thrived both inside the palace and beyond, in the magnificent formal garden. The palace and its extraordinary gardens can be enjoyed today and remain as vital as they were in the time of Beethoven, when the story takes place.
